Living with Lhasa Apsos

Joyful Companions and Their Unique Care Needs

Lhasa Apsos are charming little dogs that bring joy and companionship into any household. These spirited canines are easy to take along wherever you go, thanks to their manageable size and cheerful demeanor. Living with a Lhasa Apso can be a delightful experience, provided you are ready to dedicate some time to their specific care requirements.

Grooming: An Essential Routine

One of the most critical aspects of living with a Lhasa Apso is grooming. Their luxurious coats require regular maintenance to keep them looking their best and to avoid matting and tangling. If you opt for a show coat, be prepared for a thorough grooming session that includes washing, blow-drying, and meticulous brushing and combing every one to two weeks. This process can take anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the coat’s quality and volume. To keep the hair out of their eyes and mouth, you’ll need to tie up the topknot with rubber bands, changing them a couple of times a week. Additionally, nail trimming should be done every one to two weeks.

For those who prefer a shorter, more manageable coat, trimming a few times a year is necessary. Even with a short coat, regular washing, brushing, and combing once a month are essential to maintain their skin’s health and appearance. Despite the length of the coat, all Lhasa Apsos must be accustomed to grooming from a young age, as the coat will not shorten itself, and someone needs to perform the trimming.

Outdoor Activities: Challenges and Solutions

Taking a long-coated Lhasa Apso outdoors can present some challenges, particularly during forest walks. It’s advisable to use a suit or tie up the rear and skirt hair to keep it clean from branches and twigs and tangle-free. Despite these minor inconveniences, Lhasa Apsos do not require excessive physical activity. However, daily walks are crucial for their mental stimulation and to allow them to sniff around and catch up on the “news” of the day from the neighborhood . The best form of exercise for them is free running or leashed walks in varied terrain, rather than just on flat pavements.

Our Lhasa Apsos, Siri and Coco, also enjoy agility training. This sport is fantastic for building muscle strength and providing mental stimulation, although care must be taken to avoid overburdening them. You have to remember it is a breed with shorter feet. When done correctly, agility is a great way to enhance their overall physical fitness.

Behavior and Temperament

Lhasa Apsos are relatively quiet dogs, although there are individual differences, and the more dogs in a household, the more likely they are to bark. They quickly learn to recognize normal household sounds and understand when not to react. These intelligent dogs also read their owner’s body language and take cues on whether a situation warrants a response.

Engagement in Daily Activities

In our household, Lhasa Apsos are part of every activity. Whether it’s joining in on exercise routines or snuggling on the couch while watching TV, these dogs love to be involved in family life. Their affectionate nature and keen intelligence make them wonderful companions who enrich our daily lives with their presence.

Living with Lhasa Apsos can be incredibly rewarding. Their joyful spirit, coupled with their unique grooming needs and moderate exercise requirements, creates a bond that is both fulfilling and delightful. With proper care and attention, these charming dogs will bring endless happiness to any home.
